September 16, 2011: Meeting Others Forum, St. Thomas University
    2:30 p.m.-4:00 p.m.
    Holy Cross Conference Room

As a guest speaker at the Meeting Others Forum, I will present:
Weak, wierd, and hopeless? Addressing 8 myths about those affected by depression

Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, yet many affected by the illness receive no treatment. Stigma, feeling misunderstood, and fear of discrimination are some of the factors preventing people with depression from reaching out for help. Misinformation and misconceptions often prevent others from treating those who have depression with compassion and respect. Using factual information and illustrations from her personal experience with mental illness, Sharon Fawcett will help de-mystify depression and challenge the myths associated with it.

Sharon Fawcett struggled with major clinical depression for nine years, and anorexia nervosa for three. Following her recovery, she began writing and speaking about her experience in an attempt to offer hope to others affected by mental illness. Her work has been published in magazines and anthologies, and she is the author of one book, Hope for Wholeness: The Spiritual Path to Freedom from Depression. Sharon is currently a St. Thomas University student majoring in Human Rights and Communications.

The Meeting Others Forum was initiated by St. Thomas University History professor Dr. Fikru Gebrekidan. It was envisioned as a way to overcome barriers and foster an inclusive community within the university. Now under the auspices of the Atlantic Human Rights Centre, the forum endeavors to meet this same objective.
